THE ALSTROMERIA family is ...... quite . di verse- in appearance,. as there seems little affinity as “ between the subject of this note, A. Psitticina, and the numerous varieties which find their habitat on the other side of the Andes, in

Chili, and Peru., One of the latter, A. peregrina, is the famous lily of the Incas, and is half-hardy, with lovely pink and. red flowers. The Brazilian species, illustrated here, is striking and quaintly, pretty, the long, tubular flowers being crimson, tipped with green. It is .quite hardy and . well worth growing in a" dry, sunny position; besides whiqh it a long time when cut for the house. The genus is named after • Baron Alstromer, a Swedish botanist. T. D. LENNIE.
