SATISFACTORY YEAR.

British Overseas Trade Returns. SPLENDID EXPORT FIGURES. British Official Wireless. (Received January 13, 1.10 p.m.) RUGBY, January 12. The preliminary returns of the British overseas trade for 1932 show that the value of imports was £703,133,600, compared with £862,175,000 in 1931. British exports for 1932 totalled £365,138,000, compared with £389,164,000 the previous year. The figures for reexports were £50,914,000, against £64,035,000. The newspapers express satisfaction that during the 3'ear, in which the international decline in trade was so pronounced, the British figures have been so well maintained. The 44 Daily Telegraph ” sa\ r s: “ With the exception of the United States, the total of British exports for last year is likely to be considerably larger than that of any other county and, further, if these figures are converted at par of exchange, the value of the exports actually would be higher than those of the United States.” Importance is attached also to the fact that the balance of Britain’s. trade is greatly improving. The 44 Morning Post ” sa3*s: “ The shrinkage of total values is partl>* attributed to the reduced level of prices and to the big reduction in the import total is an indication of the effective character of the new import duties in assisting to redress the balance of trade. For the month of December British imports showed a reduction of nearly £1,000,000 compared with November and £16,000,000 compared with December of the previous 3 r ear. Exports for December amounted to £32,445,000, against £31,094,000 in November and against £32,077,000 for December, 1931. There was an increase of £1,099,000 in exports of articles wholly or partly manufactured.
