It has been ascertained that the rider is Charlie Blacklock, and that he has secured the requisite permission from the N.Z.A.C.U. and has completed the necessary arrangements to have the attempt proper- • i.u Upe r rl ??. < * and electrically timed. Although Blacklock has everything in readiness, unfavourable beach conditions have prevented the attempt being made. The machine to be used is the 600 c.c. speedway engine used by Blacklock mounted in the 350 c.c. O.K. Supreme frame used by R. A. Carpenter on the beach. It is not definitelv known when the attempt will be made. Ashburton Grass-track Meeting. Among the Ashburton riders are such well-known motor-cyclists as Jack Oakley (35 h.p. A.J.S.), Syd. Freddy (3J h.p. 8.5. A.) and Tom Farley (35 h.p. Ariel). Th© Dunedin riders include the speedway men, Alan Crighton and Lionel Homer. Both of these are accustomed to grass-tracks and are formidable competitors. The racing is due to start at 2.15 p.m. The chief event is the South Island middle-weight championship, which should be a three-cornered contest between Ahrens, Blacklock and Ranby, although the actual field is very large. Notes. Motor,-cyclists and light-car drivers will be pleased to learn that the Pioneer Club has decided to organise a social run to Loburn Domain on January 22. The outstanding success of the previous run fully warrants this decision. The chief social run of the year, the inter-club rally at Ashburton, is to be held on Sunday, January 29. Motorcyclists should pencil this date and be sure and attend. They will not be disappointed. 55 55 55 Cinder siftings. Broadsiding will be resumed at Monica Park Speedway on Saturday night. The leading riders will be Eric Whittle, Wally Kilmister and Charlie Blacklock. Whittle has an excellent race record in Australia and is holder of the flying mile record at the Speedway Royale, the standing mile record at Wentworth Oval, and both the flying and standing start records at Newcastle. The three overseas riders will meet in a three-cornered match race. This should provide thrilling racing. The Chevrolet Gold Helmet challenge race will be staged between Wally Thomas (holder) and Percy Lunn (challenger). Thomas is formidable enough if he can produce the same form that he did at the beginning of the season, but Lunn showed such improved form at the last meeting that he has an excellent chance. 55 :: Dan Higgins, of Palmerston North, will make his first appearance here, and other visiting riders will include Peter Phillips (Wellington), Gordon Lowndes (Wellington), Allan Crighton (Dunedin) and Lionel Homer (Dunedin).
