KAWARAU GOLD.

Report of Forty Ounces for a Day. GREATLY IMPROVED VALUE. (Special to the “ Star.”) DUNEDIN, January 12. _ Greatly improved values are at present being obtained from the claims being worked at Kawarau Gorge by Bell and Kilgour and Bell and Hooper. One report mentioned a sensational return of forty ounces for a day’s work, but this cannot be substantiated, and the most reliable estimate places the daily average for a week at 9oz to lloz. In Bell and Hooper’s claim the tunnel is in some 400 ft, and 210 ft of this drive penetrates very rich wash. In Bell and Kilgour’s tunnel the distance driven is 50ft more, with up to 200 ft of very rich ground. The whole area, indeed, contains a great deal of gold, and when a large stone is struck on the bottom the wash in the shelter of it is virtually studded with gold. The bottom in both tunnels is still running level, disclosing an area remarkable both for its width and richness. There are further reports of a. rich strike on the other extremity of Cromwell Flat, where several dredges operated with profit years ago. A Government party engaged on a geophysical survey is at present operating on the Cromwell Flat, radiating from the areas held by Bell and Hooper and Bell and Kilgour, and is equipped with modern apparatus for defining leads, particularly of black sand.
