240 NOMINATED.
Irish General Election on January 24.
SPEAKER UNOPPOSED. British Official Wireless. (Received January 12, noon.) RUGBY, January 11. The nomination of candidates for the Free State general election took place to-day, and about 240 were nominated for the 152 vacant seats. Mr Frank Fahy, speaker of the Dail Eireanri, Was returned unopposed. Polling takes place on January 24. The Fianna Fail will field 100 candidates, Labour 22, the Cosgrave Party 85, Farmers’ and Ratepayers’ League 25 and Independents 11, of whom Mr Anthony, an ex-member of the Dail, definitely supports Mr Cosgrave. Mr James Larkin has been nominated for North Dublin as an Independent Labour man. Women nominees include Mrs CollinsO’Driscoll and Mrs Reynolds, ex-mem-bers of the Dail and Cosgrave supporters, Mrs Redmond, widow of Mr William Redmond, the Misses Pearse, whose brother. Padraich, was executed in 1916, and Helena Concannon, the authoress, who is a Fianna Fail candidate, contesting the National University seat. Although there is no organised coalition against Mr de Valera, the Cosgrave Party organiser states that there will be loyal co-operation to avoid a split vote. The number of parties will make the counting of the votes under proportional representation laborious, consequently even the Dublin results are unlikely to be announced for four days after the poll. Mr de Valera, answering questions asked by the correspondent of the “ News-Chronicle,” said that if he was returned he would be willing to resume annuities negotiations with Britain, “ but only on the basis that we retain what is our own.” He added: “We have been hampered in many ways, especially in our dealings with Britain, by the carefully fostered belief that we no longer have the support of the people. We look to this election to put that beyond doubt, enabling us to speak with greater authority.”
