BOWLING.

Stiff Battles in Pairs Competition. FOUR ROUNDS YESTERDAY. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, January 11. At the New Zealand bowling tournament the first four rounds of the pairs were played in glorious sunshine. By the afternoon the greens were so keen that it was hard to hold them. The competition was divided into twenty-six sections on thirteen greens, 106 pairs being engaged. Only three bowls per player were used in the pairs event. The innovation was approved, as it saved much time on the four rounds. C. Hardley (AVest End) and Jones (Woburn) had a stiff battle on the Wellington green. Jones was eight up at the tenth head. Both driving four heads were killed. Hardley then scored on five heads, and was two down. The eighteenth was killed twice. Playing again, Jones had shot. Hardley failed to disturb, and the bell went, Jones winning by four. Widdup brothers (Kelburn) were one down on the last head, and were lying three when Needham (West End) killed tlie head. A rush was made to get the jack away, but the bell stopped play. Noad (Lyall Bay), against C. Hardley (West End) in the second round, was 16 to 6 at the twelfth head. On the next five heads Hardley scored 1,3, 4, 2,4, and on the eighteenth head Noad resorted to driving and failed. Hardley scored three on each of the final heads, to win, 26-18. Scolon (Victoria) was down 17-2 on twelve heads to Grant (Dunedin). He scored 12 in five heads, and in the last four pulled off a narrow victory by one. Parkhouse (Wellington) romped away at the start against Morrison (Christchurch), leading 15-2 on eight heads. Morrison got four on the fifteenth, and was only three down, a great recovery. Morrison closed the gap to one, and Parkhouse won on the last head by a single. Livingstone (Oneliunga) won the first two games at Thorndon against Ginger (Hutt) and Marshall (Wellington). He resorted to driving. Six heads were killed in the first game, and five in the second. In one head against Ginger, three successive drives took out three Hutt bowls. „ ~ Ginger, who is a member of the Hutt Borough Council, beat J. Beanland (Christchurch). Beanland then turned the tables on Gardiner (Kelburn), who wanted two to win and was lying two on the head 'when Beanland" s bowl lightly rubbed the shot bowl and carried the jack back for two to win. J. Porteous (Wellington) threw away his game against Smith (Opunake) at Victoria. On the nineteenth head, he was lying two. and could have drawn the third to win. Fie played a faulty shot, and carried the jack to his opponent, who scored three and won. Tourlock (Eastbourne) drew level, 20-20, on the twentieth head with Brown (Christchurch), and was pipped on the last. Rodger (Khandallah) romped home against Higginbotham (Mount Albert), 33-16. The card included 5, 4 and three 3’s in the third round. On the A’ictoria green, the umpire was called upon to measure for the shot on two rinks. In neither case could he separate them. Neither side scored, although the heads counted. Casey (Thorndon) secured his third win against Foy (Hawera), who kept him on his toes in the early part of the game. Casey had previously beaten Gordon (Carlton) and Brown (Christchurch). Robertson (Onehunga), who was run-ner-up in the Australian carnival singles last year, went down badly to Doherty (Kelburn). Parkhouse and Josephson, with four wins each, meet in the fifth round on the Wellington green at 9 a.m. to-mor-row. The following is the list of wins of players in the pairs who have a chance of qualifying after the fifth round. Four rounds were played to-day, and there are sixteen with four wins each. Section A.
