REMANDED IN CUSTODY
Insurance Claim Was False, Police Allege. Patrick Joseph Garvey, a greengrocer, of St Asaph Street, twentythree years of age (Mr Amodeo), was remanded in custody for a week when he appeared before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. Garvey was charged that on November 16, with intent to defraud, he attempted to obtain from the Ocean Accident and Guarantee Corporation, Ltd., £lB in money by means of a false pretence. He pleaded guilty. There had been a fire at Garvey’s shop on November 14 last, said ChiefDetective Carroll. Garvey had put in his proof of loss to the insurance company, stating that in the fire he had lost a suite of furniture valued at £25. As the result of inquiries by the company, it was found that the furniture had been over-insured, and had actually been bought for £7 10s, not £25. The Magistrate, in ordering a remand, said that it appeared as if Garvey had made a definite attempt to defraud the company.
