CHARGE OF ASSAULT

Young Man Struck With Weighted Cane. INCIDENT IN STREET. Per Press Association. ROTORUA, January 12. Mansel James Jones, a middle-aged taxidermist, this morning was charged with assaulting Thomas M’Cone, causing bodily harm, also with being a rogue and a vagabond, and being armed with an offensive instrument with felonious intent. The case arose out of a sensational assault in the street last night, according to the story for the prosecution. Jones, armed with a weighted cane, met a young man as he came out of a house in Pukaki Street, accompanied by a girl, and struck him a violent blow on the head. When the police were called he walked away. The man and the girl were followed up, and near the centre of the town Jones again attempted an assault, but he was knocked out by a nearby spectator and taken to the police station. The Court granted a remand till Monday. Bail was allowed in the sum of £IOO and one surety of £IOO, the accused to report to the police daily.
