TROTTING NOTES.

ti m ® @b m m ® ® gg si ® ns is si a @ si is m ® A CCEPTANCES for the Greymouth Trotting Club’s meeting will close on Wednesday next. ** * * Acceptances for the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting will close at noon on Wednesday. IN GOOD ORDER. Regal Voyage is in splendid order for her Ashburton Trotting Cup engagement. She was indulged in an essay over a mile and a half at Addington vesterday in 3min 20 l-ssec, pacing home over the last two furlongs in 32sec. It is doubtful if Regal Voyage has ever been better than she is at present, and, as she is capable on grass courses, she should go a good race at Ashburton on Monday. * * * * The well-known North Otago sportsman, Mr Malcolm Allan, died yesterday at his home near Oamaru. The late Mr Allan was a flat-race jockey and was among the successful horsemen in 1881. Later he became interested in trotters and pacers and trained and raced a few horses with success. For several years he has been engaged in sheepfarming, but has always been a keen admirer of both sports. SHOULD WIN. Golden Direct completed a thorough preparation by running a mile at Addington yesterday. He was only allowed his head over the last furlong, when he flew. Provided he arrives at Auckland as well as he has left home he should win a race or two at the Auckland Club’s meeting. WILL WIN MORE RACES. Todd Lonzia can unwind a torrent of speed, and he has a deceptive way of going. Even with a break in. he trotted a mile and a half in 3min 24sec at Addington yesterday. He is engaged in the Midsummer Handicap at Ashburton on Monday, and he is quite capable of going with the pacers. * * * * D. Withers has evidently got to know Plain Silk, and the gelding is pacing true in his work. He has plenty of speed and stays on well at the end of a mile and a half. He looks even capable of winning a two-mile race. COMING RIGHT. _ Ruth Logan continues to work very satisfactorily, and there is evidence of her returning to her best form. In company with Fairyland and Dolly I-luon, she paced a mile and a half comfortably in 3min 29 l-ssec, and left an impression at the end that she could have done better had she been required to do so. IS VERY WELL. _ College Boy is working exceptionally well at Addington, and undoubtedly is a cut above the average on his mark. But, unfortunately for him, there are two more pacers in commission that are as good as he is, in fact one of them in Little Nelson is regarded as his superior. The three are engaged in the Longbeach Handicap at Ashburton on Monday, and they are on the limit. Little Nelson beat his opponents at Ashburton recently, and looks like doing so again on Monday. BETTER MANNERS. Royal Comrade is improving in manners under G. S. Smith, and the gelding has left the mark in several races recently. At Addington he is pacing kindly, and a mile and a half in 3min 21 2-ssec shows that he is pretty well. G. S. Smith specialises in getting bad beginners to gain confidence at the barrier, and in this department of the sport he has been very successful. A recent recruit for barrier manners is Royal Wrack, a gelding who has undoubted speed, but is cranky at the start of his races. If Smith can induce him to leave the mark more than one win should be recorded. * * * * F. Holmes left last evening for Auckland with the pacers Golden Direct, Rey Direct, Cyone and Harvest Child. PETERWAII ADMITTED. While in Christchurch recently Mr E. G. Bridgens, owner of Peterwah, expressed a wish that his horse should be allowed to take part in the exclusive contest for unhoppled trotters at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting in February. The club had decided to invite only the owners of Stanley T., Wrackler, Huon Voyage and Olive N'elson to allow their horses to compete, and they have acquiesced, but on receiving Mr Bridgens’s application the officials have agreed to admit Peterwah to the contest, which is a mile and a half race, the five horses to begin on level terms and from a flying start. e * * * * Belle Lorimer is trotting well in her work at Addington, and she is very solid. She can mix it with the pacers, take the lead or drill along with them without making a semblance of a hitch. The change of shoeing that took place over the week-end has improved her considerably. At Addington yesterday morning, she worked with the pacers, Silver Bingen and Great Author, and compassed a mile and a half in 3min 28 l-ssec. She is engaged in the Introductory Handicap at Addington on January 1 and is 48yds behind in a 3.38 class. If she continues to improve at the rate she has done this past week she will soon win races as a trotter. DIRECT MORNING, _ The consistent and well-performed Direct Morning is reported to be doing a good preparation for the Auckland Trotting Cup. The son of Direct Wilkes has been responsible for some sterling performances this season, but the task now set him to win the Cup is ver} 7 different from anything he has yet undertaken. In his last victory he just managed to scramble home from Brentlight. That effort, while a winning performance, was not very impressive, and with fifteen horses, all useful and possessing speed, handicapped in front of him in the Cup, Direct Morning will have to be a better horse than many believe to even get a place.
