NEW HORSES.

Debutants and Little Tried < Performers. ENGAGED AT AWAPUNI. c (Special to the “ Star.”) WELLINGTON, December 22. As might be anticipated, little fresh j blood appears among the acceptances for the holiday meetings, and the little that does will probably not trouble investors. At the Manawatu meeting there are only nine or ten horses who i are not quite well known already to racegoers. In the Maiden Plate Brad- J man, Golden Chart, Hunting Lodge, Nebulae, Mercian Prince, Ramuna and . Takiri are the strangers, and in the 1 Nursery Handicap Catalogue, Royal Jest and Silent Flight. j Bradman, whose only appearance at the racing crease previously was in the Trial Stakes at Hastings last month, is a three-year-old chestnut half- , brother by Hymestra to High Court, ’ being out of the Mystification mare Taleteller, a performer of little account herself. Bradman is owned by Mr T. White, of Hastings, whose colours ; Great Charter also carries. Golden Chart is the unraced three-year-old full sister to Journet, a real he-rogue now on the schooling list, but , she is said by her owner, Mr F. J. Attfield, of Palmerston North, to be cast in a wholly different mould so far as her character is concerned. She is a chestnut filly by Arausio from the Boniform mare Conchita, belonging to the same family as the New Zealand Cup winner, The Banker, and she was purchased as a yearling by her present owner for 30 guineas. Hunting Lodge, who is also unraced, is a close relative to Oratrix and Concentrate, 'being a three-vear-old bay filly by Hunting Song from Martianette (dam of Martian Chief), by Martian from Equitas, dam of Oratress. She was offered at last year’s Trentham sales bv her breeder, Mr S. J. Gibbons, but was passed in at 175 guineas. She has since been leased to Mr H. M Manaway, the owner of Habit. Nebulae belongs to the Awapuni trainer, J. P. Coyle, and is a three-vear-old brown gelding by Arausio from the Hymettus mare Itamos, thus a brother to Master Arausio and a halfbrother to Polydectes. Coyle purchased him for 50 guineas as a yearling, and his only race to date has been in a nursery handicap at Awapuni last Prince is another of defunct Mercian King’s few offspring, being a three-vear-old bay gelding from the Garance mare Royal Song. He is owned by the starter, Mr H. Connop, who bred him, and in his only race to date, at Feilding three weeks ago .he was so badly left that no line could be gleaned on his ability. He is a wellgrown sort, however, and is expected to come good. Ramuna is a five-year-old bay gelding by Paper Money from the Martian mare Sunbird, a full sister to Ardenvhor (New Zealand Cup) and a good performer herself, and he is still owned by Mr H. T. Hume, of Masterton, who purchased him for 350 guineas at the 1929 yearling sales. As a two-year-old he was sent over to Australia in the spring, but did not race, and after his return he had three starts in the Dominion without showing up. Takiri is another of Mercian King’s offspring. He is a three-year-old chestnut gelding from the Gold Crest mare Peep o’ Day, and he was bred by Mr H. S. Rathbone, who recently disposed of him to Mr C. F. Philps. He is a descendant of the Rous Emigrant mare Gipsy, one of the first thoroughbred brood mares imported to New Zealand (1844), and who established a most successful line that still continues to produce good horses. Two-year-old Debutants. Catalogue, the first of the fresh two-year-olds, is a bay gelding by Lord Quex from the Catmint mare Catalani, the dam also of Paleta and Vandyke. This youngster was bred by the late Mr W. G. Stead, and was purchased from his estate in August by a Palmerston North partnership consisting of Messrs E. L. Barnes, J. Hughes and A. W. Akers. Royal Jest, the other new youngster, is a brown filly by Top Gallant, whose death occurred recently, from the imported Black Jester mare. Golden Jest, a close relative to the sire Arausio. She is a half-sister to Just Gold, who was a winner in Australia. She was purchased for 45 guineas at the Sydney Easter sales by the salesman, Mr C. E. Robertson, of Wellington, and she will thus carry the same colours as Wait and See, another Australian purchase and the first to be raced by Mr Robertson. VETERAN TO REAPPEAR. Seatown, who is due to appear in the Manawatu Cup oq Boxing Day, will be making his first appearance of the season. and it will be just twelve months on New Year’s Day since he raced. On that day he ran unplaced in the Auckland Racing Club Handicap. Seatown won the Manawatu Cup three years ago. He was a good-class horse at his best, but he is now a nine-year-old, and it will be too much to expect him to exhibit all his old ability, though there should be some racing in him yet.
