MOUNTING UP.
Riccarton Stables Have Had 68 Wins. MAY BEAT 1931-2 FIGURES. If Riccarton trainers can maintain the rate of success which they have achieved since August 1, they will better this season their score of 193 wins obtained in the 1931-32 season, which ended on July 31. During that period they won £34,442 in prize money. So far this season horses trained at Riccarton have won sixty-eight races, have been placed second fifty-five times and third on fifty-seven occasions. The prize money captured amounts to £11,928. The successes have been gained on the following courses : —Riccarton 37. Ashburton 9, Geraldine 10, Kurow (Oamaru) 2, Wingatui 3, Washdyke 2. Trentham 4 and Randwick (Sydney) i. Last season 1690 galloping events were decided in New Zealand and the | aggregate will be about the same this | season. Since August 1 460 galloping events have been run, or about 27 per cent of the total. There is no galloping meeting within 100 miles of Christchurch until February 18, and Riccarton horses will have to travel to have any chance of paying for their upkeep. During the next fortnight horses from this centre will be racing at Ellerslie. Awapuni, Tauhercnikau, Wingatui, Hokitika, Greymouth, Reefton, Wyndham. Waikouaiti. Oamaru and Invercargill. At the Christmas and New Year holiday fixtures twelve months ago Riccarton trainers won thirty-three races. The successes were gained at the following meetings:—Auckland 5, Westland 5, Dunedin 3, Manawatu 1, Waikouaiti 3, Greymouth 3, Marton 1, Wairarapa 3, Oamaru 4 and Reefton 5. H. and A. Cutts are on top of the local list in respect alike to wins, minor placings and to prize money. A thoroughbred breeder who races on the scale maintained by Sir Charles Clifford is always an asset to the sport, but never more so than at a time like this, when racing is passing through troublous times owing to outside conditions. The success of the Clifford colours this season is gratifying to all ’overs of the sport. The Riccarton list now stands:— Stakes.
