THE SOCIAL ROUND.

Gatherings Held in Town and Country. ' BROWNIES' SOCIAL. The Riccarton Brownies held their annual closing ceremony on Tuesday evening in St James School-room. The guests of the evening were the Guiders, and Guides of the Riccarton Company j and the Rev R. de Lambert. The supper j committee comprised Mesdames Baxter O’Neill (president), R. de Lambert, F. E. Cossins, E. M. Brown, P. Palmqr, 11. M’Leod (secretary), Captain N. M. Jarman, Jean Harris (Brown Owl), L. SCorsbie (Tawny Owl) were also present. Sweet peas and apricot streamers decorated the supper tables, and a handsome china owl presented by Mrs W. 11. Price to the Brownie pack stood in the centre of the table. This trophy will be given in monthly competition to the various sixes for attendance and neatness. Thanks were extended to the donor of the gift and to the committee by the Rev R. de Lambert. Items given were:—Musical, Jane O’Brien and Betty Coombes; canoe song, Girl Guides; dancing, Molly Steel and Pauline Price: recitations, Marie Brown and Ruth Yellowlees. Young People’s Dance. Five "enterprising members of the Young Fanciers’ Pigeon Club—Gwynne Lawrence, Tony Molineaux, W. Whiteside, Lester Fleetwood and Pat Ililson —organised an enjoyable dance for their young friends on Tuesday evening. The schoolroom of St Barnabas Church was decorated for the occasion with pink roses and delphiniums in the hall and golden-shaded iceland poppies on the supper tables. Music was supplied by a radio-gramophone. Mesdames J. W. K. Lawrence and L. M. Molineaux were chaperones. Those present included: Mollie Whiteside, Ruth Fear, Lorna Mann. Tisch, Richard Barker, F. Brown, A. Needham. Variety Evening. A variety evening was held recently in the Selwyn Kindergarten in honour of Miss Lillian Cherry, whose marriage will take place shortly. Miss F. Ohlson and Miss D. Ede were hostesses. An enjoyable evening was spent in games and dancing. Mr W. J. Giblett was M.C. Musical items were rendered by Mrs L. Blyth and Mrs H. L. Jamieson. The music for the dancing was supplied by Mrs V. 11. Line and Miss D. Ede. The bride-elect was the recipient of many useful gifts. Miss Eileen Hughson was the guest of honour at a morning tea tendered I to her by the active members of the Aeolian Club and held in Beath’s tearoom. The president, Mr Ernest Empson, presented Miss Hughson with a bound volume, and spoke of the members’ regret that she would not be returning to Christchurch again to participate in the club’s activities. Those present were: The Misses Eileen Hughson, Olive Cooper, Lillian Hanham, Violet Halliday, Lucy Fullwood, Isla Barter, Eve Poison, Phyllis Kinniburgli, Gladys Brooks, Olga Weilard-King and Bessie Pollard, Messrs Ernest Empson, Hamilton Dickson, Frederick Page, Claude Davies, and Allen Wellbrock. Social and Dance. A “ hard-up ” social and dance was held in the Islington Hall on Tuesday evening. Music was supplied by Ashby’s Band and extras were played by Miss May Riddell. The mock court caused a great deal of amusement. The Monte Carlo one-step was won by Miss Jessie Stuart and Mr R. Woodham. The funds were in aid of a children’s Christmas tree. The usual Christmas party held by the Young Men’s and Young Women’s Guilds of St John’s Church, Latimer Square, took place in the schoolroom on Wednesday evening. Many guests were present in order to honour Mr and Mrs E. O. Ball, who had just been married. The bride and bridegroom entered the hall to the strains of the Wedding March, and were later presented with gifts from the guilds by the Rev J. T. M’William. The brother of the bridegroom, the Rev F. O. Ball, lately ordained, was the recipient of a cheque from the parishioners. The committee responsible for the success of the evening were Misses E. Hare, I. Kent, Messrs W. R. Stagg, M. T. Gundersen and R. O. Ball. The guests of honour were Mr and Mrs E. O. Ball and their bridal party. Fritz Seymour’s orchestra supplied the music.
