CHRISTMAS CHEER.
Sumner Unemployed’s Scheme. £l2B FOR DISTRIBUTION. Over one hundred men on the list of Sumner unemployed will participate in a Christmas distribution of funds amounting to £127 19s Id. The individual dividends range from £1 5s 3d to 8s 3d and will bring Christmas cheer to many homes. The scheme is a tribute to the organisation and executive ability of the men themselves. It was founded last May when the Sumner unemployed formed a social club and adopted regulations suggested by the Town Clerk (Mr J. F. Menzies). The scheme was open to all registered members of the unemployed and each undertook to pay sixpence each week they were unemployed. It provided for those who might be transferred to another district and even resulted in financing a group of members who met with temporary misfortune. It also included the means to promote entertainments. Of the total receipts, £75 18s was raised from dues, £23 3s 6d from dances, £2B 19s 9d from concerts and £l7 12s 7hd from card parties. One hundred and seven men joined the scheme and over a period of thirty weeks made a total of 3041 weekly contributions. From the total receipts, this represented a dividend of 10.1052 d per weekly payment. /- The money was diligently collected each pay day by the indefatigable secretary, Mr L. Archbold and paid to the Town Clerk, who not only acted as treasurer, but paid the funds into an account that earned interest amounting to 18s lOd. As a result, there are eighty-five members who will receive an equal share of £lO7 6s 3d owing to their having made full time.
