CARE OF GARDENS.

Horticultural Society Meets. SPECIAL PRIZES AWARDED. The executive committee of the Canterbury Horticultural Society met last evening, Mr O. W. B. Anderson presiding. The St John Free Ambulance Association wrote asking for a donation towards its work. Tt was decided to take no action, but a round table collection was taken up among members. Mr E. S. Brittenden, District Traffic Manager, wrote advising that entries for the railway station garden competition had been received as follows: — Class A, Rakaia, Heathcote, Little River Belfast and Papanui; Class B. Southbrook, Rangiora, Riccarton, Burnham and Linwood. It was decided to judge the competition in the third week in January. Messrs W. J. Humm, R. Christensen and H. L. Da r ton were appointed judges. The Henry Morse and Son’s Challenge Cup for an exhibit showing distinct advance in species or cultivation was awarded to Mrs A. C. Johns. Mr A. S. Nicholls wrote stating that he was now in a position to pay out the legacy bequeathed to the society by the late Mr John Tisch. The actual words of the bequest were: “To the Canterbury Horticultural Society I give the sum of £IOO to be invested and the interest therefrom to be used in providing an annual prize or annual prizes for amateur exhibitors at the chrysanthemum show.” The letter was received and it was decided to invest the money on fixed deposit. Special prizes awarded in the society’s garden competitions, 1932-33. were announced as follows: Taste and design, N.Z. Institute of Architects, Christchurch Branch Cup— Mr H. E. Otley. Cultivation and maintenance, Messrs Ashby Bergh and Co.’s Cup—Mr R. J. Thompson. Flowers and shrubs, Messrs Nairn and Son’s special prize—Mr A. K. Hadfield. Vegetables, class A, Sutton’s Cup, per Messrs J. G. Ward and Co.—Mr R. J. Thompson. Class B and C, Messrs L. B. Hart and H. L. Darton’s trophy—Mrs Hampton Rhodes. Native plants, Mr J. S. Hawke's trophy—Mr A. K. Hadfield. Ferns, indoor grown, Mr T. Smart’s Challenge Cup—Mr B. Moore. Outdoor grown, Mr G. H. Holford’s trophy—Mr T. Smart. Any special feature, Mr R. L. Kennett’s Cup—Mr H. E. Otley. Mr G. W. Skellerup’s special prize for herbaceous borders was awarded to Mrs A. Ashby, 32 Wairarapa Road, and Mr Retallick, 91 Charles Street, for vegetables in eighth of an acre gardens. It was decided that trade exhibitors at the society’s shows should be allowed to sell from their stands, but no exhibit should be removed earlier than an hour before closing time.
