FIRE PREVENTION
Protection for Allenton District. (Special to the “ Star.”) ASHBURTON, December 20. The fire prevention problem in the Allenton district was briefly discussed at to-day’s meeting of the Ashburton County Council, when the following resolution was passed: “ That, in order to safeguard the Allenton district in the event of an outbreak of fire, the council request the Ashburton Borough Council to undertake the matter of fire protection in that ward under similar conditions as formerly, namely, £2O a year, plus £5 for each fire which the brigade attends.” Inspection of Crossing. At to-day’s meeting of the Ashburton County Council, a letter was received from the Selwyn County Council in regard to the state of the Camping Gully Creek, stating that an inspection had been made, and it was found that it was in order. Mr R. Wightman said that the crossing was no better now than it was twenty years ago. It was decided that Messrs J. Carr and R. Wightman interview the Selwyn Council with regard to the state of the crossing. Mid-Canterbury W.D.F.U. The first meeting of the Provincial Executive of the Mid-Canterbury Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held this afternoon, the president (Mrs F. Johnson) being in the chair. Delegates to represent the executive at the Dominion conference at Timaru in Jan-uary were appointed. It was decided to invite Mrs Jacobson, Dominion president, to pay a visit to Ashburton when she comes south for the Dominion conference, with a view to organising additional branches in the county. It was agreed to support the resolution passed at the recent meeting of Ashburton County farmers urging the Governor-General to call the people of Xew Zealand together in prayer.
