ADVENT ORDINATIONS.
Four Christchurch Candidates. Two candidates for the priesthood and two for the diaconate were ordained by the Bishop of Christchurch, the Rt Rev Campbell West-Watson, this morning at the Cathedral. Henry Arthur Childs and David Dunville Thorpe were ordained priests, and Henry Ivor Hopkins and John Evans were ordained deacons. The Bishop was attended by his chaplains, the Rev Canons J. de B. Galwev and H. O. T. Hanby. The Rev E. C. W. Powell (Sydenham) preached an inspiring sermon from the text, “ Follow Me, and I will make you Fishers of Men ” —Matthew iv., 19. The Epistle was read by the Rev _O. Purchas, of Rangiora, to which parish Mr Hopkins has been appointed. The senior deacon, Mr David Thorpe, read the Gospel, and the Litany was recited by the Very Rev Dean Julius. The candidates were presented by the Rev S. Parr, examining chaplain to the Bishop. An impressive feature of the service was the singing of the “ Veni, Creator Spiritus,” alternately by the Bishop and the congregation.
