FOR THREE MONTHS.

Stay at “ Government Hotel ” Ordered by S.M.

“ When I take these fits, I have a habit of walking into an hotel,” said an accused man in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. M Well, you are going to walk into a Government hotel for three months,” said the Magistrate (Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M.) The accused was Charles William M’Donald, 44, years of age, of no fixed abode, a labourer, who was charged with drunkenness. He had had three previous convictions within the past six months. The accused, in evidence, said that he was subject to fits, and when suffering from one, he had the appearance of being drunk. The Magistrate: These fits come on after you have had some liquor, don’t they?—No. The accused told the Magistrate that he had had one drink on the day in question. Later, he told Senior-Ser-geant Fox that he had had three shandies.

After the Magistrate had sentenced M’Donald to three months’ imprisonment, the accused announced that he wished to appeal against the sentence. The Magistrate: You can’t.
