BET S ON WHIPPET RACES.

Bookmaker Sent to Gaol for Month. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, November 2. Bookmaking at a Sundav whippet racing meeting was alleged against Lawrence Chapman, aged twentv-eight who appeared for trial before the Chief Justice to-day. The jury returned a verdict of guilty, with a recommendation for mercy on the ground that it was an isolated case. His Honor said he would give effect to the recommendation for merev, but would not deal with the case on the basis of a fine. If imprisonment was imposed there would be fewer bookmakers. Accused was sentenced to a month's imprisonment without hard labour.
