There are innumerable words the meaning of which has changed in the passing of time “ Restive,” for instance. originally meant quiet, unmoving; “ quaint ” meant to make known —like, acquaint; “ nice ” (from the Latin ” nescius ” —ignorant) meant foolish ; and “ smug ” meant trim, elegant.
