No agreement was reached in the Conciliation Council in the hearing of the dispute between the typographical workers and the employers, heard in Wellington. A deadlock was reached on the wages issue. Proceedings were adjourned to November 15, when the hearing will be resumed. It was agreed to hold over the disputed classification clause and to discuss the wages clause. These were the principal points of contention. The employers’ wages proposals provided for a reduction of approximatelv 10 per cent from the net rates now being paid. The workers’ counter-proposals were on the basis of the existing award. Discussion of the wages clauses occupied the greater part of the day. Although concessions were mentioned and considered, no finality was reached. The adjournment decided upon is n accordance with the requirements of the amended Act. If no agreement is come to by November 15, the present award will expire in one month from the date of commencement of the conciliation proceedings.
