REPERTORY THEATRE.

Barrie Play at Radiant Hall This Evening.

In presenting to Christchurch audiences plays by such men as Shaw, Ibsen, Galsworthy and Milne, the Christchurch Repertory Society has not only proved staunch to the ideals of the repertory movement, but has shown that the public appreciates productions of literary merit. This evening, in the Radiant Hall, it will stage Sir James Barrie’s “ What Every Woman Knows.” a play which, in its delineation of Scottish character, sentiment and humour, is typically Barriesque. Many' old playgoers preserve an especial place in their memories for

“ What Every Woman Knows.” They associate it with the late Nellie Stewart, whose distinctive gifts were ho wqnderfully expressed in the role of Maggie. Barrie has given nothing finer than Maggie, that retiring little Scots lady who guided John Shand (though that humourless and forthright young man knew not that he obeyed the rein) from obscurity to political fame. John Shand is an excellent creation, but Maggie emphasises the genius of Barrie. Miss Dorothy Maginness, who made a notable debut with the society in “The Silver Box.” is Maggie, and Mr Harold Shaw is John Shand. Effective support should be given by Mrs Valerie Tennant, Miss Agnes Richardson, Dr Robinson Hall and Messrs H. M'D. Vincent, Thompson and A. M’Quarrie. Bookings can be made at The Bristol.
