WHEAT DUTIES.
Minister Faces Difficult Question. WANTS OVERSEAS CAPITAL. Per Press Association. HAMILTON, August 23. “ I am in favour of taking off the wheat duties stated the Hon C. E. Macmillan, Minister of Agriculture, to a “ Waikato Times ” representative this morning. “ The import of fowl wheat from Australia, which has been decided upon will result in a better price and better quality wheat for the poultry industry,” he said, adding at the same time: ” 1 must say that it is slightly difficult to reconcile the desire to protect Colonial capital invested in an Auckland freezing firm and to refuse the same to Canterbury capital invested in wheat lands. People can gather from this how difficult the question is. Either is right, but both cannot be. We should allow overseas capital to operate freely in the Dominion.”
