NO MORE LEASES.

Department to Protect Existing Mines. MINISTER’S POLICY. No more coal leases are to be granted by the Mines Department, except in special circumstances. This announce.vent was made by the Minister of Mines, the Hon C. E. Macmillan, when he visited Murchison last week in the course of his tour of inspection of the mining areas of the West Coast. A great deal of interest has been excited in Murchison by the proposal to work a coal lease there. If a license is granted, it is intended to supply coal to Nelson and Blenheim, and a deputation urged the Minister to grant a lease. In replying to the representations, Mr Macmillan said that it was the policy of the Department not to grant any more coal leases. The reason for this was the depressed state of the coal industry. The only exceptions to this rule were applications from remote localities or where it could be established that a definite promise had been made in the past to grant a lease. He asked the deputation to supply him with information proving that a market was available for the coal in Nelson and that it could be supplied at an economic price.
