At Forest Hills (New York), in the quarter-finals of the United States women’s lawn tennis championships. Mrs .1 B. Pittman (England) defeated Miss Mary Greef (U.S.A.), 6-3, 6-2. Mist* Carolyn Babcock (Los Angeles) defeated Mrs L. A. Harper (U.S.A.), 6-3. 7-5. Miss Joan Ridley (England) defeated Mrs Marjorie Painter (U.S.A.), 3-6, 8-6. 6-4. In the semi-finals. Miss Jacobs beat Mrs Pittman, 6-2, 6-3, and Miss Babcock beat Miss Ridley, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Newport Tourney. At Newport, H. Ellsworth Vines (U-S.A.) entered the final by eliminating Dave Jones (New York), 3-6, 10-12, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. The final was won for the second time by Vines, who beat Allison 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. Doubles. In the sehii-flnals Allison and Van Ryn beat Wood and Stoeffen, 6-3, 6-3, 5- 6-4. In the final Vines and Gledhill beat Allison and Van Ryn, 6-8, 13-11, 8-6, 6-
