ON THE LAWN.

Tweeds, Leather Coats and Furs Worn. MEETING AT RICCARTON. Having made their debut on Grand National day, the chic little spring hats and smart suits went back into seclusion again, for rain clouds menaced the skies and threatened to spoil any such finery worn to-day. Added to this was the unpromising weather report, which mentioned such unpleasant contingencies as sleet. So with this warning before them, the women racegoers were prepared for emergencies when they went out to Riccarton to-day for the second day of the Canterbury Jockey Ckib’s meeting. Fur coats, rain coats, tweed suits and felt hats summed up the fashions on the lawn. There were a few particularly smart ensembles, but the general impression was of comfort rather than display. A bright delphinium blue leather coat worn with a smart little blue felt hat and a gay fluttering scarf looked very effective and suitable to the occasion. Another attractive ensemble was a dark brown woollen skirt and a short brown astrakhan coat with wide revers, worn with a smart sailor hat of coarse lacquered straw trimmed with a wide tangerine ribbon over the top of the crown. Miss Barbara Gould, daughter of the chairman, Mr George Gould, wore a smart Persian rust afgaline wool suit, marmot fur necklet and a brown pedaline straw hat. Other present included:— Mrs H. A.
