RENT REDUCTION.

Harbour Board Affirms Principle. At to-day's meeting the Lyttelton Harbour Board affirmed the principle, of rent reduction under the National Expenditure Adjustment Act. Captain 11. moved that a motion passed on July 6 last granting no reduction of interest or rent under the National Expenditure and Adjustment Act, 1932, on certain of the lx>ard’s properties be rescinded and that reductions be granted retrospectively to April 1, 1932. A schedule of the properties concerned was appended, showing the total amount at stake to be £8:; 10s. Mr J. W. Bowden opposed the motion, stating that the Finance Committee had closely investigated each case and the reductions were not warranted. Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., who seconded the motion, stated that the board, as a local body, should fall in with the spirit of the Act and assist in measures taken to put the ship of State on an even keel. Mr R. T. Williams supported the mo-

bon and suggested it be referred back to the Finance Committee. Th secretary, Mr C. H. Clibborn, said the rentals, in the cases where requests as mentioned had been made, were nominal and did not nearly represent the value of the land. The motion was carried.
