BASKETBALL NOTES.

Play on Saturday in the basketball matches at South Hagley Park was again difficult owing to the continued bad weather of the preceding week. Interest in the A grade was well sustained and some good games were witnessed. Mairehau won by default from Training College B. The competition promises to be a long one this season, for although several of the sections are finished in the junior B grade, all will not be ended until after next Saturday’s play. The semi-finals and finals will follow. The C grade sectional play will not be concluded until about the Saturday following, and the senior B, as nearly as can be calculated, until the week following that again. The A grade, although it is the smallest in the competition, contains only one section, and play in this quarter is not expected to finish until August 20, three days before the representative team leaves for the Dominion tournament in Invercargill. The Canterbury team will be:—Goalkeepers, N. Betts, S. Wigmore, O. Wheatley, O. Jenkins (emergency); centres, J. Gibson, V. Flood, D. Irving, I. Poole (emergency); defence, J. Craig, A. Dasler and M. Armstrong. '

Digby's A v. St Mary’s A—Both teams were playing short and there was a good deal of changing round in the various positions. K. Sharman, defence for Digby’s played in goal creditably, being especially useful in rescuing the ball from St Mary’s defenders, while I. Morrison was on the. sideline. Later, when I. Morrison resumed play, Sharman had to replace J. Gibson (centre). It was a fair and clean game, with both sides playing well. Digby’s combination is improving, but the goalkeepers need to back this up with sure throwing. O. Wheatley, St chief goal-thrower, was absent, and this had a noticeable effect. Score: Digby s 11, St Mary’s £L

Training College A v. Varsity A— Varsity put up a good fight against Training College and the scoring was fast. Both teams’ defence, however, became tired towards the end of the second spell. Varsity managed their passes very well, whilst Training College showed good anticipation and cleared tli6 ball several times by open passing down the court. E. Moore (Training College) was on form, and M. Wellwood was shooting better than she has done for some time past.. C. Camm played steadily in Varsity s defence, but needs to put more go into her game. Z. Giorgi is a good centre and combines well with P. Metson. Score: Training College 19, Varsity 14.

Varsity B v. United A—United, with their splendid organisation, completely outclassed Varsity and won by a maigin of 12 goals. The ground was extremely slippery, but United, by sure and deliberate passing, had the advantage over the faster-moving and lighter Varsity team. K. Armstrong made some good saves. A. Dasler was a tower of strength to the defence. FCowper (Varsity) saved_ viable ground by punting the ball, but. it is as well not to make this a regular feature of play, as unless the ball is well controlled the opposition is liable to gam possession. Score: United 17, Varsity B 5. it it it

Sacred Heart A v. Technical A—This match was exciting, the sc ores* being close throughout. Sacred Heart eventually won by two points. The Technical defence was solid, but Sacred Heart almost invariably caught it up through V. Flood in the centre. Sacred Heart had three good defenders in the captain F. Maxwell and W. Rose. Score: Sacred Heart 8, Technical 6.
