Deer are reported to be numerous in parts of the Ashburton Gorge where they constitute a nuisance to runholders, especially those along the lower parts of the gorge, who have large areas in turnips. The crops have suffered severely since last week’s snowfall, deer having been seen there in herds varyini? from to nine in number.
