HELMUTH HOFFMANN.

Fine Programme for Second Recital. For his second pianoforte recital in Christchurch on Thursday of next week Mr Helmuth Hoffmann announces a superb programme, ranging from Handel to Rachmaninoff and da Falla. It. opens with one of Bach’s happiest works, the Italian Concerto, which is followed by Handel’s now seldom played but delightful set of “ HarmoniousBlacksmith ” variations. There is no Beethoven and of Brahms only the Andante from the Sonata in F minor, and those who heard Mr Hoffmann play the “ WaFHstein ” and two Brahms Rhapsodies at his first recital may regret this omission, until they see what is promised instead. Most notably, there !is Schubert’s magnificent “ Wanderer ” 1 Fantasy, while a charming selection of modern compositions is followed by a group of song-pieces—Liszt’s transcription of Schubert’s ” O Love Long Lost ”

and “Thou Art My Rest,” and of Schumann’s “ Liebeslied,” and Mendelssohn's beautiful air, “On Wings of Song.” Paderewski’s “ Theme Variee ” and Chopin’s Polonaise in A flat conclude a programme which Mr Hoffmann’s accomplishments as a pianist promise to make memorable. The recital will be given in the Radiant Hall.
