“MONEY FOR NOTHING”
Sparkling British Comedy at Crystal Palace.
One of the biggest deluges of spontaneous humour, bright repartee and wholesome* fun ever presented on the talking screen *is contained in “ Money For .Nothing,” a British International comedy, winch commenced a season at the Crystal Palace Theatre to-day. Betty Stockield, Donald Calthrop, Edmund Gwenn and Henry Wv.-n----man have the leading roles in this production.
From the first moment, when Jeff Cheddar, an unlucky gambler, dolefully descends the steps of the Casino at Monte Carlo, to the last, when lie is saved from contemplated suicide for the second time by the sight of a beautiful girl, it is laughter, laughter all the way. The early scenes are set in Monte Carlo, where Jeff Cheddar has been gambling without success. He meets beautiful Joan Blossom in difficulties with her car, and in extricating her falls hopelessly in love. His violent protestations of devotion raise no answering spark in the girl, and she sweeps away, leaving him flat. A little later, however, she relents, and graciously condescends to dine with him. sending him into the seventh heaven of delight. He cannot pay the bill, and his hotel will not give him any more credit, but what of that; they will go to another hotel. The principal male character. through no fault of his own, is taken for Jay Cheddar, an Australian gold mine owner, and when he ultimately reaches London the slightest word from his mouth alters the fortunes of all those who own shares in the gold mine. The utter pandemonium that reigns in a London hotel when ho arrives is more than amusing. Betty Stockfeld plays a very clever role as Joan Blossom, who manages, through her father (Edmund Gwenn) to get mixed up with the gold mining shares.
It is truly no exaggeration to say that “ Money for Nothing ” provides a laugh every ten seconds—good, clever humour, spoken in the purest English accent. »
