GIFT TO NATION.

Lady Houston Posts £40,000 Cheque. JIBE AT THE CHANCELLOR. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received July 29, 10.20 a.m.) LONDON, July 28. Lady Houston has written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer as follows:—“Your regrettable refusal of the £200,000 I offered to lessen the shameful cut in Britain’s defences has decided me to send a smaller sum of £40,000, which is the amount of my income tax, which would be due if I were domiciled in England, instead of Jersey. I hope you will not be too proud to accept it.” Lady Houston, widow of a multimillionaire, offered the Government £200,000 for expenditure on Britain’s defence, but the offer was refused as Britain’s defence policy had been definitely settled.
