Stock Shot and Stolen by Thieves. Sheep stealing is developing to an alarming extent in Canterbury, according to reports from various parts _of the country. Not only are sheep being stolen alive, but several complaints • have been made of sheep being • slaughtered indiscriminately. The latetst report is from Mount 1 Grey, where a raid was made on Mr L K. J. M’Lean’s station, “ Mountain : Meadows.” It was found that a mob [ of sheep had been fired on, and in l addition/to a number of prime car- - cases, which were carried away, seven ,' were lying on the ground. ' It is stated by station owners that ‘ similar occurrences have been frequent ; of late, though this is the first occa- > sion there has been such wholesale - slaughter. Precautions are being taken J by farmers to protect their property, 1 and many are employing patrols.
