THE POUND SCHEME
Big Drive Commenced To-day.
The first big drive under the Pound Scheme was commenced to-day, workers concentrating on practically all points in the city. Early reports from those in control of the various sectors were most encouraging, and big results are expected. A splendid organisation of voluntary helpers has been arranged in a few days, and the executive officers have been unsparing in time and energy in their efforts to have everything in readiness for the work.
The Richmond depot opened on Thursday last, and the New Brighton depot expects to open next week. A depot is now open in the St Albans district and is located in Colombo Street.
The number of applicants for relief during the week was approximately 2100, which represents about 8500 people. It was possible to meet the demand.
The acting-director desires to thank the following for donations received:— Mr A. K. Anderson, Messrs Paynter and Hamilton, Messrs C. S. M’Cully and Co., Mr P. H. Venables, Messrs A. J. White, Ltd., the Selwyn Plantations Board, the Rev J. R. inwood, Messrs Armstrong and Co., Ltd., Messrs Weeks, Ltd., Mr D. M’Leod (Grasmere), and Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd. There is an urgent need at the present time for firewood, potatoes, onions, vegetables, chairs and tables.
