THE WEEK’S WORK
THE FLOWER GARDEN. Make out seed orders, not forgetting reliable sorts, but add a few novelties. Rose and shrub planting can be done. Place your order as early as possible. Do no planting of seedlings or outside sowing while stormy wet weather lasts. Trenching, manuring and renovation of borders can be done. Look over seed boxes and repair them ready for the spring work. Clean labels, sharpen, clean and oil tools, so that everything is in order for the spring offensive. Clip hedges of conifers, such as Macrocarpas, etc. Hand weed any seedlings. There would be no need to grumble at weather conditions if everything grew as well as weeds. Clean Gladioli bulbs, taking every care to keep the sorts separate and correctly labelled. THE VEGETABLE GARDEN. Dig over weedy ground. Trench the plot where you are sowing Parsnips and Carrots next season. Hand weed Onions. Prepare the Onion bed for next season. Make a sowing of early Peas and Beans. Protect Peas from birds, but apply the method of protection when the seed is sown. Once let the birds get a taste and the damage is done. Sowings of Turnips can be made. Prepare ground for Potatoes. Place Potato sets in boxes to sprout. Plant fruit trees. Prune and spray established trees.
