At the Democratic Conference there was a slight variation in the vote on the second ballot among the leaders and Governor Roosevelt gained eleven votes, bringing his total to 677. Mr Alfred E. Smith lost seven, dropping to 194, and Senator Garner remained unchanged at 90. After a third ballot, still without the selection of a candidate, the Convention adjourned tonight. The third ballot increased Governor Roosevelt’s vote to 682, and Smith dropped to 190. After an all-night session of nominating speeches, seconding speeches, demonstrations and balloting, the Presidential nominations started at 4.30 a.m. with the Roosevelt managers apparently determined to press the advantage while possible. The first ballot vote was: Votes. Roosevelt 6661 Smith 2011Garner 901 White 52 Traylor 421 Byrd 25 Reed 24 Ritchie 21 At the end of the second ballot, in which Governor Roosevelt had gained but ten votes his managers moved an adjournment. However, the New York ! delegation insisted that as they had been kept all night they should stay all day if necessary. Roosevelt supporters accepted the challenge, withdrew the motion, and a third roll call started. The indications were that they might continue balloting throughout the day. Oklahoma’s 22 votes went to Governor Murray in the first ballot, and in the second were cast for Will Rogers, the comedian. The convention adjourned at 9.5 a.m. after twelve hours’ continuous session. The third ballot showed little difference, Roosevelt polling 682 and a fraction. , Garner made slight gains and Smith some losses. The next session begins at 8.30 this evening, when the balloting will be continued.
