THE PRINTING TRADE.

Interesting Lecture on Processes. A demonstration lecture was give to a large gathering of printers and their staffs at the Public Library Hall last evening by Mr C. J. Morrison, assisted by Mr G. Morrison. Mr W. F. Soper occupied the chair. Mr Morrison dealt in detail with the history of ink manufacture from the time of Gutenberg; and explained the nature of the ingredients, how they were prepared before mixture and grinding, the essentials in the grinding process, the different grades of ink suited to different printing processes, and the relationship between ink and paper necessary to coriiply with the varied conditions covering the low to "highgrade qualities of printed matter used in industry and commerce. The lecturer dealt in interesting fashion with the differences between the many modern methods of printing, including letterpress, lithography, offset, photogravure, tinplate, and imitation intaglio effects. These were graphically illustrated by printed examples. At the conclusion of the lecture, Mr Morrison, in responding to a vote of thanks for liis address, invited the gathering to a supper at Dixieland, where an enjoyable social hour was spent. Musical items were rendered during the lecture and at Dixieland by Messrs J. Lockhart. S. Andrews, R. Woolcoek and A. E. Williams: and a special “ Ode to Ink ” was a feature as a community song.
