Free Railway Passes Cancelled. “NEED FOR ECONOMY.” (Special to the “ Star.’*) ASHBURTON, June 28. In reply to the Ashburton High School Board’s protest against the withdrawal of free school season tickets on the railways to pupils who lived m town during the week and returned to their homes for the week-end, the Hon R. Masters, Minister of Education, has advised the board that the Government’s decision was arrived at because of the urgent need for economy and only after careful consideration had been given to the question. P.W.M.U. Sale of Work. The annual sale of work held by the Ashburton branch of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union this afternoon and evening was well attended. The Rev A. G. Irvine, who opened the sale, stated that the effort was in aid of home, Maori and foreign missions. Good business was done at the stalls, which were in charge of the following: —Variety, Mrs F. Wear; produce, Mrs G. Tulloch; sweets, Mesdames I. Fowler, E. Norrish and A. B. Shaw and Miss Corbett; home delicacies, Mesdames J. Boothroyd, James Thompson and S. Thompson; cake, Mesdames W. J. Moore, G. Anderson and H. Lloyd and Miss Cameron; afternoon tea, Mrs Jary, Misses Murray, M’Laughlan and Doak. Lodge Meetings. The officers of the Success of Ashburton Lodge, U.A.0.D., were installed last evening, when the Arch Druid, Sister J. Collett, presided. Officers were installed by the District President, Brother E. Parkin, assisted by Past Grand President Brother O’Donoghue. Past Arch Sister Boniface was presented ivith a Past Arch diploma, and Sister B. Wallis, who gained second place in the ritual competitions, was presented ivith a lodge badge. Labour Member’s Address. Mr R. Semple, M.P. (Wellington 3ast) addressed a meeting in His Maestv’s Theatre this evening on the ecolomic crisis. The Mayor (Mr W. 11. iVoods) presided.
