Interesting S.W. Report
from Belfast. CONDITIONS AR GOOD. (By "AERIAL,.”) The following: report on short wave reception has been supplied by Mr C. Scanes, North Road, Belfast:— “ Conditions' generally, at present, seem to be quite favourable, most stations being heard at good strength, but, in this district, power line interference often mars reception. Following is a log of stations heard during the week-end on my four-valve short wave receiver—“RVls, Siberia, 70.1 m.: Not very loud early in the evening; usually reaches full speaker volume by 11 p.m. RVS 9, Moscow, 50m.: Heard well at full speaker strength, usually very steady, at 8.30 a.m. daily (our time). The bells of the Kremlin Tower usually are heard chiming the hour of midnight. W3XAL, Bound Brook, 49.18 m.: Heard now only on Sunday afternoons. On June 26 the station was heard well from 3.30 until signing off at 4.30 p.m. WBXK, Pittsburgh, 48.6 m.; At good strength on Sunday afternoon until closing at 4 p.m. This and W3XAL rather noisy. REN, Moscow, 45.38 m.: Audible most mornings, but never up to much. OXY, Denmark, 31.51 m.: Heard most mornings, but never reaches more than fair ’phone strength at its best. W2XAF, Schenectady, 31.48 m.: Heard well at present, usually becoming audible about midday. On Sunday afternoon it reached full speaker strength by 2.30, and after 3 o’clock it was received with more volume than I could use. Usually signs off at 3.30 p.m. Zeesen. Germany, 31.38 m.: Has improved during the past fortnight. On Sunday morning heard at excellent speaker volume in a concert relay—the laughing and talking of the audience between items being clearly audible. WIXAZ. Springfield, 31.35 m.: Excellent on Sunday afternoon—volume a little less than W2XAF. VK2ME, Sydney, 31.28 m.: Every Sunday evening at excellent volume and quality—sometimes full speaker without any reaction. Severe fading often noticed; the same , applies to VK3ME. EAQ, Madrid, 30.4 m.: Comes in well daily from noon until 1.30 p.m. Two announcers usually heard—one in Spanish, the other in English. Radio Colonial, Paris, 25.63 m.: Excellent every morning throughout the full programme from 7.30 until 10.30 a.m. Usually received with more volume than I can use. GSSW, Chelmsford, 25.53 m.: Has also improved during the past fortnight. East Sunday morning it was heard quite well at good speaker strength. From 9 until 10.30 a.m. dance music (played by Ambrose and his orchestra in the Mayfair Hotel, London) was enjoyable. At 10.30 Big Ben chimed the midnight hour in London: this was followed by the Empire news bulletin. 12RO, Rome, 25.4 m.: Volume is usually quite fair but rapid fading is sometimes bad. This station puts over some very fine operatic music. WBXK, Pittsburgh, 25.25 m.: Was well received on Sunday afternoon. It was just audible at 11 a.m., increasing to full speaker strength by 2.30 p.m., which was maintained until closing at 4 p.m.” Correspondence. To H.S.: Your letter will appear in Saturday s notes—no space available to-day. Just as well, perhaps, as your comments will then have a larger circle of readers.
