TWO EXCELLENT FILMS

Walter Huston in Fine Role , at Liberty. “ The Beast of the City ”, starring i that master character actor, Walter Huston, and " West of Broadway ”, with popular John Gilbert in a delightful romantic role, are being shown at the Liberty Theatre. The two feature films constitute a particularly well diversified programme, in which there is pleasing blending of drama, comedy, thrills and romance . Since his advent as a film actor, Walter Huston has been seen in several difficult characterisations, and in “ The Beast of the City ” he gives a vigorous portrayal of a zealous police officer who sets out to rid a large American city of its racketeering element. The acting of Huston is especially good, and he is assisted by a strong cast, including Jean Harlow, Jean Hersholt, .. Wallace Ford, Tully Marshall and Dorothy Peterson. “ West of Broadway ” is a comedyromance in which John Gilbert has the role of a young millionaire who returns from the war to find that his fiancee has jilted him. In his despair, he goes '■n a spree, and the following morning finds that he has married a girl much below his station in life. Attempts to buy off the girl fail, and eventually he realises that his reckless marriage « brings him the happiness he desires. i
