BASKETBALL NOTES.

Tiie selection o C the A and senior B grade basketball representatives and their first practice gave added interest to the play at. South Hagley Park on Saturday. In addition, the half-time positions of the teams in the senior B competition were available, and better basketball was witnessed than has been the case for some time. In the A grade the team is practically certain, but in any case the whole twelve players are required to attend the Dominion tourney in Invercargill in August. Only nine girls are required tor the final selection in the senior B grade, but the date for their match with WeHington has not yet been fixed. J he first representative matches will be those of the junior B and C teams against Kaikoura teams, which will visit Christchurch next Saturday week. The A grade and senior B representatives will play Ashburton on July 16. Billets for the Kaikoura teams on the Friday and Saturday nights are still required, and those willing to billet one or more girls are asked to get in touch with the secretary of the Canterbury Basketball Association—Mrs J. Cairney, ’phone 38-042.

The A grade representatives are: Shooters, Nancy Betts (United), Olive Wheatley (St Mary’s), Stella WJgmore (United), emergency Olwen Jenkins (United); centres, Vonnie Flood (Sacred Heart), Joan Gibson (Digby’s), Doris Irving (Technical), emergency Irene Poole (Sacred Heart) ; defence, Joan Craig (Technical), Amelia Dasler (Training College), Marjorie Armstrong (United), emergency Kathleen Sharman (Digby’s). The goalkeepers should put up a good showing, but the centre needs training in combination tactics, although it is composed of excellent material. The defence is an unknown quantity. The girls chosen are strong and well built, but, with the exception of A. Dasler, are somewhat slow op the turn. Practice against the representative goalkeepers may, however, develop speed in the defenders. Olive Wheatley is the real strength of the goalkeepers. Nancy Betts is an excellent goal-thrower, and her welltimed field play comes from experience. There was only the point of steadiness to swing the choice from Olwen Jen- 1 kins (emergency) to Stella Wigmore, who is a first-rate wing. Joan Gibson is new, but, with training, should play well. The two other centres, Doris Irving and Vonnie Flood, should give her good support. Irene Poole combines well with V. Flood, but preference has been given to those of proved dependability. Joan Craig is the best defence in the grade, and Amelia Dasler is the quickest, and passes intelligently. Marjorie Armstrong and Kathleen Sharman are really equal in play, but M. Armstrong is, if anything, the more reliable of the two. The senior B representatives are: Goalkeepers: Winnie Parkes (Beckenham), Ngaire Brewer (Sacred Heart). Zftna Cbennells (West Christchurch Old Girls), Kathleen Glubb (Sacred Heart); centres. Thelma Jardin (Sacred Heart), Olive Robson (West Chri.stchureh old Girls). Joyce Howard (Merivale), M. Hill (Beckenham > : defence. M. Phillips

(Beckenham) and Cath Taylor (West Old Girls). W. Parkes does excellent work and makes good use of strategy to combat her lack of height. N. Brewer is a. good shooter. Z. Chennells seldom attempts to shoot, but her field work is excellent, as is also that of K. Glubb. T. Jardin, O. Robson and J. Howard form an excellent combination of individually good players, whilst IS/. Phillips is the equal of any of the A grade team. Training College. A v. Digby’s A.— This proved to be a hard-fought game, with Digby’s playing excellently. K. Wallace and D. Andrews were noticeable in the centre. Score: Training College 16, Digby's 10. Technical A v. Training College B.— Again and again Technical broke through the Training College defence, although Training College did their best and put in some hard work. N. Corne (Training College) and D. Irving (Technical) were outstanding. Varsity A v. Sacred Heart A.—-The keenness and excellence of tiie play aroused a great deal of interest. B. Wilson (Varsity) sent in good passes well, and R. M’Kendry (Sacred Heart) was the steadiest of the shooters. Score: Sacred Heart 16, Varsity 7. Mairehau v. Varsity B.—The Mairehau defence worked well. I. Campbell shot reliably, as also did H. Franes who, with the advantage of her height, was able to punt the ball out of reach of her opponent and then catch it. Score: Mairehau 12, Varsity 2. United, v. St Mary’s.—N. Betts and O. Jenkins worked excellently with S. Wigmore and their passing combination was responsible for a number of goals. St Mary’s defence, when they got the opportunity, passed out well to their centres. Score: United 24, St Mary’s IC. The positions of the teams in the senior B grade at the end of their first half are:—Beckenham A 20 points. Sacred Heart B 18. West Old Girls A 16, Merivale A 13, Technical B 30. Te Kalia A 10. Ballantyne’s A 7, Gregg Seniors 6. Varsity C 5. Training College. | «* and Training College D 2.
