A SELFISH MAN.

Comment in Maintenance Case. AN UNUSUAL CLAIM. (Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, June 27. Unusual circumstances surrounded a maintenance case heard before Mr Wvvern Wilson, S.M., at Hamilton. Arthur Cyril Gogen, a well-educated young farmer, of Ilorahora, claimed that his father, Harry Gogen, as a wealthy man, should help to support his (the son’s) four children. The father was reported to be worth £20,000 and his hobby was travelling round the world. On Tuesday he intended leaving for Vancouver. Complainant admitted that shortly after his divorce he had travelled south with the intention of marrying another woman. He changed his mind as her parents considered his financial position did not warrant marriage. The divorced wife was now living with the children in a small house at Kohimarama. He agreed that his father had lent and given him various sums of money.

“He impresses me as being a remarkably selfish man,” said the Magistrate, referring to complainant. “He tries to make me believe he is very anxious about, the children; yet he could spend money to get a divorce and look for another wife. He has freed himself of his matrimonial burden and assessed his own contribution reasonably with the object of getting rid of one family and marrying again. Now that he finds he cannot he wants to be relieved of all responsibility. He is not destitute and he should realise on his farming assets. He would then have sufficient to maintain his children.” No order was made.
