Sir Truby King arrived by the ferry steamer yesterday.
His Honor Mr Justice Kennedy will arrive in Christchurch from Dunedin to-day to conduct the civil sittings of the Supreme Court. Mr F. W. Dawson, assistant general manager of the Bank of New Zealand, left Wellington for Auckland last week to join the Aorangi for Fiji. Congratulations on the honour recently conferred on him were offered Dr James Hight, C.M.G., at the meeting of the Society for Imperial Culture on Saturday night. Mr L. Davis, who lias been clerk in the Otautau railway station for some time, has received notice of his transfer to Christchurch, and leaves this week to take up his new duties.
Mr A. Anderson has been reappointed the representative of the Ellesmere County Council on the Selwyn Plantation Board. He resumed his seat at the meeting this morning. Mr V. W. Hargreaves, of the Wellington branch of the Commercial Bank of Australia, and formerly of Auckland, has been appointed accountant of the bank at Timaru. Guests at the New City Hotel include Messrs J. H. Dondey (Melbourne). W. B. Williams (Auckland). J. 11. Allen (Dunedin), W. Watson (Waimate) and J. L. Goodwin (Methven).
Mr Fred Birks, of Sydney, New South Wales, was named as second vice-pre-sident at the R.otary international meeting of directors following the adjournment of the convention, announces a cablegram from Seattle. A Masterton message says that the death occurred on Saturday of Mr C Yates, formerly secretary of the Masterton Racing Club for many years. He was also secretary of the Masterton Trust Lands Trust and various other local institutions.
Dr B. Hart, who for the past year has been superintendent at the Seaview Mental Hospital, Hokitika, has received notice of his transfer to a similar position at Nelson, vice Dr Hayes, who has been transferred to Seacliff. Mr William Giles Duff, who retired on superannuation from the Defence Department six years ago after long service at Lyttelton and Wellington, died at Wellington on Friday. He was a keen cricket and football enthusiast and a well-known bowler, being secretary of the . Eastbourne Bowling Club for a number of years. Mr G. Hall advised the Selwyn Plantation Board this morning that the Selwyn County Council had asked him to continue as its representative on the board, and he was pleased to act in that capacity. Mr Hall was welcomed to the meeting by the chairman (Mr W. Stewart). Cable advice has been received by Mr and Mrs W. F. Bennett, of Armagh Street, that their son, Mr F. J. Bennett, M.A. (N.Z.), formerly of the staff of Canterbury College, who has been studying at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, for the past two years, has been successful in gaining his Cambridge degree, and that he will be returning to Christchurch by the end of •July.
