POULTRY SHOW.

Officially Opened by the Mayor. IMPROVEMENT TO STOCK. That poultry shows were a means of interesting breeders in the improvement of their stock and that in this connection the fanciers were of great assistance to the utility breeders was the main substance of remarks made by the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) and Messrs H. S. S. Kyle, M.P., and R. W. Hawke, M.P., at the official opening of the Canterbury Poultry, Pigeon, Canary arid Cat Club’s show in the King Edward Barracks last evening. The show will remain open until Saturday night. The president of the club (Mr A. E. Hounsell), in welcoming the official party, said that in the present financial circumstances it was difficult for the club to keep going. The fanciers patronising the show kept up the standard of the breeds, and without them the utility men would find their stock deteriorating so much that in a few years’ time the poultry would be like common “ barndoors.” “ To me it seems an extraordinary thing,” stated the Mayor, “ that despite the hard times the fanciers have maintained their enthusiasm to the extent of producing one of the best shows held in the history of the club in Christchurch. The club is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, of organisations in the city.” Greatest of Its Kind.

Mr Sullivan added that the first Mayor of the city, Mr William Wilson, had been president of the club, and since that time other mayors had oc cupied that office. The number of entries this year was something of which to be proud. The show was the greatest of its kind in New Zealand and Australia and could hold its own with any in the world. He trusted that the financial side of the effort would show a fitting return compared with the quality of the exhibits. As one who was interested in and had made his living out of utility stock in the last twenty-seven years, Mr Hawke said that the exhibition of utility birds at the show was the finest he had seen.
