GREAT NORTHERN.

Auckland’s Cross Country Race To-morrow. (Special to the ” Star.”) AUCKLAND, June 3. The Great Northern Steeplechase will be run to-morrow at Ellerslie, and a really good field is engaged, for the large majority of acceptors have already shown good form over country. Wiltshire and Billy Boy are at the top. The former looks well just now, but he has been suffering from lameness recently, and may not be quite at his best to do himself justice as a dual Grand National winner. Billy Boy knows the Ellerslie country well, and he was successful in his last effort over it, when he won the Autumn Steeplechase at Easter. Make Up won the Egmont Steeplechase, and has jumped the Ellerslie country perfectly since his arrival here. If the hurdle race to-day does not take too much out of him he should run a good race, and his connections are confident that he will make a good showing. Paris has been jumping in good style in his schooling tasks since he arrived. Landmark has only twice been raced over country, and he won the Waikato Steeplechase. He has done some schooling at Ellerslie, but has not impressed as much as Make Up or Billy Boy. Claremore has improved in his jumping since he raced at Te Rapa. Master Lu has done everything asked of him, and looks like repeating his effort of last year, when he won, providing his race in the hurdles to-day does not affect him. Nukumai is a proved jumper, and has handled the country well since his arrival at Ellerslie. Lucess has previously shown that he can jump fences at Ellerslie well, having won there a couple of seasons ago, while he was third in this event twelve months ago. Callamart has been schooling well. Copey has shown himself to be a good ’chaser at Ellerslie and Riccarton, and is sure to get support. Nassock is a good stayer, and he has been jumping well. Summed up, Billy Boy, Master Lu and Make Up appeal most.
