The Winter Heath.

A Garden Corner,

RICA MELANTHERA would be a beautiful thing if it flowered when our garden display was at its peak, and it is therefore all the more beloved for giving us its floral treasures in the depth of winter. To see it at its best we should inspect it at Mr Orten Bradley’s garden at Charteris Bay or with some of the growers around Cashmere and Redcliffs, where it grows into an erect bush 6ft high, the branches thickly studded with small light purple blooms, showing conspicuous black anthers in the centre. Like many of the Ericas, it is good for cutting and on that account, is a valuable market flower. Be sure and plant it in a favourably warm position to begin with, as it is unsafe to shift a grown plant. And don’t be afraid to cut the flower branches freely, as it should be pruned as soon as the flowers are over. It comes from Cape Colony. T. D. LENNIE.
