AFTER-HOUR TRADING.
Auckland Tobacconists Make Objection. (Special to the “ Star.") AUCKLAND, May 20. At a meeting of the recently-formed Auckland Hairdressers’ and Tobacconists’ Association, the irregular hours observed by many in the trade were discussed. It was decided to request the Labour Department to take legal action against all hairdressers*who kept their saloons open after hours, and to compel all shops selling cigarettes and tobacco to close one half-day in each week. It was also decided to approach the police in respect to Sunday trading, which the meeting viewed with concern. The Commercial Trusts Act, 1910, was considered, and the secretary was instructed to write to the Auckland Chamber of Commerce and the Auckland Master Grocers’ Association with a view to their support being enlisted in a movement to have the Act repealed. Correspondence was received from Whangarei tobacconists and grocers promising assistance in this direction, and it was decided to communicate with members of Parliament asking them to support the abolition proposal on the grounds that it hampered legitimate trade.
