“MAN OF MAYFAIR.”
“ The Unholy Garden ” will he screened at the Plaza Theatre for the last time to-night. One of the latest romances of the screen is “ Man of Mayfair,” which will open at the Plaza to-morrow. The lilting melody of “Alone with My Dreams” will soon be sung everywhere. The dancing and singing of Jack Buchanan are a feature of the picture, as well as the excellent cast of players. “ Alone With My Dreams” is entirely Buchanan’s own composition. As a titled man about town, whose love for a pretty dancer leads him into some delightfully humorous situations, Bu'-hanan’s role in “ Man of Mayfair ” gives him unlimited scope. Joan Barry, who is featured in the cast, is one of the most brilliant English screen stars, with many stage successes to her credit. She has starred in many British films, including “ The Outsider,” “ Rich and Strange ” and “ Atlantic." Others who have leading parts are Xora Swinburne, Warwick Ward, Ellaline Terris and Cecil Raymond. Lavish praise has been shewered by. prominent English film critics on “ Man of Mayfair.” Below are given some of the notices in leading English papers about this film:— “ Happy-go-lucky atmosphere, individual comedy situations and light-hearted dialogue. together with touches of ornate stage spectacle in opening scenes. Polished stellar portrayal, effective support, artistically palatial interiors, charming natural exteriors. Dependable light entertainment of popular i attern.”—“ To-day’s Cinema.” “Chaplin could not have improved on Mr Buchanan’s look when a bee begins to crawl up one leg of his shorts Miss Barry looks lovely and really behaves like a girl for whom life has suddenly become very attractive but rather perplexing.”—“ Evening- News.” “Mr Jack Buchanan fits his part as his dress suit fits himself. His rash boast that he is an expert on bees leads him into a comedv situation of Chaplin dimensions. Buchanan is one of the finest assets in British talking pictures.”— ** Daily Mail.” “ With this voice, those looks, ar.d those talkie feet, is there anything Mr Buchanan could not do as a talking comedian? *Man of Mayfair ’ is a cheerful entertainment with refreshing moments . . . it is a charming fantasy. thoroughly English in tone ar.d Buchanan in humour.”—“Evening Standard. ” “The Paramount unit at Elstree is to he congratulated on the success with which they have retained the English atmosphere in this production. Mr Buchanan is the only player cn the screen who can give a suggestion of manliness to the part of a man-about-town. . . Always pleasing and witty and possesses in remarkable degree that quality which we call ‘charm.’”— “ Sunday Chronicle.”
