THE LEAGUE CODE.
Close Struggle Expected To-morrow. HORNBY PLAY ADDINGTON. Plornby, joint leaders with Linwood in the senior League competition, are expected to have a hard struggle tomorrow when they meet Addington. The two first grade games, starting at 3 p.m., are:— Hornby v. Addington, at Sydenham Park. Sydenham v. Riccarton, at Jerrold Street. Linwood have a bye. Good football should be seen at Sydenham Park for Hornby have now struck form, and if half-back Burns can get the ball away Baker, Howisoa and Wellsmore should provide fireworks for the gallery. The Addington team will be a different combination from that which went down to Riccarton. C. Brimble will probably be full-back in Place of M’Garry, who will be given a trial in the five-eighth position, where he should go well. G. Falgar will be out again, and, with Jim Amos, who is turning on good stuff now, W. Stuart, L. Higgins and M. Clegg, should keep the Hornby men busy. L. Brownie will find a place in the pack, and, with F. Flanagan and R. Ward, will lead the Addington forwards.
St Minards, though not yet fit, is still useful in the Hornby pack. His low, hard tackling is a lesson for a lot of players in the code. W. Woodgate still holds his own with the younger Hornby forwards, and his weight and experience help the side considerably. Hornby have made a successful experiment in trying Palamountain at centre and on the wing. In those positions he is a hard man to stop. A. Fraser, a brother of “ Spot ” of that name, is developing into a good forward for Sydenham. In some quarters surprise is expressed at Selector W. Le Warne trying out old players who are attempting to make a come-back instead of giving games to promising young Sydenham men like C. Campbell and C. Holland. One of the best of tho Sydenham packmen now is S. Sherlock, who was first given a trial at full-back. He does know how to tackle low. Matthews and Turton, the tricky Sydenham five-eighths, should keep Riccarton busy. Sydenham will have to watch W. Murray, Riccafton’s new winger, who shows promise of developing into something really good. The Shaekel brothers strengthen the side considerably, while Vine, whose boot has gained most of Ricearton’s points so far, will send up the flags if he is given half a chance. Riccarton will have a new five-eighth to-morrow, when W. M’Caw, who for the past two seasons has been playing in Auckland, will be turning out. A. Pcddie was missed last week, but he will probably be out to-morrow. The programme of the English team includes a game against a combined side at Dunedin on August 6, Although no definite word has been received, the team to play the tourists will probably be chosen from Canterbury and Otago players. Linwood now have G. Sharp, who was badly injured last season, turning out again. On the other hand. W. Rogers, whose bad knee has not yielded to treatment, will not play again this season.
