J ' /VOTES AND NEWS FROM EVERYWHERE

'DOMINATIONS for the Greymouth Jockey Club’s meeting on Friday, June 3, close at 9 p.m. to-morrow. There will be a meeting at Reefton on the following day. * * * * Second acceptors for the English Derby to be run on June 1, declared on March 31. left sixty-nine in the race. The third and final acceptance will be declared next Tuesday. * * * * Nominations for the Reefton Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday, June 4 close at 9 p.m. to-morrow. CLAREMORE’S CONDITION. There was some anxiety among the admirers of Claremore when he did not work on the tracks at Ellerslie on Tuesday. Inquiry elicited the information that Claremore has not been feeding as well as his trainer would have liked in the past couple of days and it was decided to give him a little exercise on the hills in preference to working him cn the track. It is not certain that Claremore will keep his engagement in the Waikato Steeplechase. RIDERS AT TE RAPA Riding engagements for Te Rapa tomorrow are:—J. Day, Kanapa, and possibly Trishna; J. M’Rae, Leitrim, Luminary; A. Baker, Eager Rose; H. Brown, Arawa Rose; E. Keesing, Chateau, Taurua; T. Rowan, Nassau Lady, Protomint; A. G. Parsons, Wilton, Woodful; E. Garrett, Kaihoremai; E. Ludlow, Beryl Latour; R. M’Rae, Hawthorn, Wishbone, Good Idea, Toujours and Imamint (if started in the Flying Handicap) ; W. J. Bowden, Wiltshire; D. O’Connor, Make Up, Landmark, Appledore; R. Miles, Cruachan; K. Voitre, Prince of Orange, Speedmint, Marshland; P. M’llroy, Foxhound, High Pitch, Arcade. FOUR SHILLING TOTE. England went one shilling better than Amberley on April 12, when the experiment of a 4s totalisator minimum unit was tried at Newmarket. Newspaper comment was to the effect that the experiment was not a success. One objection was that it was impossible to invest ten shillings on a horse, as the machine could operate only in multiples of four shillings. KNOW THE WAY HOME. Two galloping meetings have been held at Ashburton this season and five of the horses engaged tomorrow have been successful at one or the other of them. On September 19. Solwit won a six furlong hack handicap, Waiwene won the five furlong Trial, and Water a mile and a quarter hack race. On December 5, Ma Belle Polly was successful in a six furlong hack event, and Taku Tama won the open six furlong handicap. GAINING EXPERIENCE Make Up and Landmark were given their first schooling over the steeplechase fences at Te Rapa, when they were sent once round on Tuesday morning. Apart from Make Up losing a little ground at the post and rails the second jump after leaving the straight, both horses fenced well. They ran about a little, but this was to be expected over a circuit that was new to them. Make Up and Landmark are in very solid condition, and this will stand to them in their racing. A. E. ELLIS FOR ELLRSLIE. A. E. Ellis has been engaged to ride Mr J. Clothier's team, Prince Val, Lord Val and Woodful, at the Auckland winter meeting. Two of these, Prince \ al and Woodful, will be racing at Te Rapa to-morrow, but Ellis will not be north_ in time, so that Parsons will be on Woodful. No rider has yet been engaged for Prince Val. All three are very fit at present, although Lord Val’s work was interrupted by a slight cold. Woodful showed good form earlier in the season. He won in his first start at Matamata and later was placed at Te Aroha and Paeroa. He has not done a great deal of racing, and only for the fact that he has gone sore on several occasions there is little reason to doubt that this record would have been considerably better, for he is a good sort. If produced at his best to-morrow he should make his presence felt, especially now that the going is easier. APPLE DO RE’S FIRST. Appledore schooled well over hurdles at Te Rapa on Saturday. He is an acceptor in the Maiden Hurdles there to-morrow, but is also engaged on the flat. It is intended, however, to start him in the hurdle race. BOWDEN FOR WTLTSHIRE. W. J. Bowden has been engaged for Wiltshire in the Waikato Steeplechase to-morrow. Wiltshire was seen at Egmont this month, just failing to defeat Nukumai in the Adamson Steeplechase on the second day. Wiltshire well forward, and he likes big fences. As he knows the Te Rapa circuit thoroughly he should be able to make a bold showing.

The Southland light-weight jockey, L. J. Ellis, will be riding at the Otautau meeting to-morrow, so that he will have to miss Ashburton, where several engagements were available for him. ON A W HOLES ALE SCALE. According to Mr F. More OTerrall, in a recent issue of London “ Sporting Life,” South Africa is the home of the largest owner of racehorses in the world. His name is Henry Nourse. The owner of three stud farms, Mr Nourse possessed in March: 17 stallions, 260 mares, 110 yearlings, 2S horses at grass, and 304 racehorses on lease—a grand total of 719 thorough-breds. Mr Nourse races few, if any, horses himself, but he leases his horses in all parts of the Union. It is a common thing for him to pick up a morning paper and see that horses which he owns have won nine or ten races the previous day in various parts of the country. COMPULSORY RETIREMENT. Royal Lineage had a thorough overhauling recently in Hastings, and the verdict was that, if he was persevered with, he must break down permanently. It is most unfortunate for his immediate connections, as already he had demonstrated great possibilities as a jumper, having won two out of the three hurdles races he contested. It was the third that brought about his breakdown. Undaunted, his owner (Mr W. C. Whitfield) is now on the look-out for another jumper, and prefers one by Limond. * * * * Battle Hero was lame after working on Tuesday, but apparently the trouble was due to a knock, as it proved only temporary. He was out yesterday, moving quite soundly. R. M’Lennan hopes to have the brother to Battle Colours ready for a race about July. WON BATTLE FOR LIFE. Mr Fred Thackray, the noted English amateur horseman, was unconscious for thirteen days as the result of his fall in the Grand National at Aintree in March. At latest, he was well on the way to complete recovery. NUKUMAI TO RUN. Nukumai was a trifle sore after his racing at Hawera, and he was allowed to drop out of his engagement at Wanganui. He is going along all right, however, and M. Conway states he will, all going well, run in the Great Northern Hurdles. This means that R. Miles will not be available for Easterly. * * * * Acceptances for the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting will close at 9 o’clock on Monday night. ENGAGED TO-MORROW. Cynthia N. has not had a race since i she accounted for the Morningside Handicap, one mile, at Avondale last month, but she is working well, and it is doubtful if she ever looked better than she does at present. The imported mare is due to make her next appearance in the Winter Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Te Rapa to-mor-row, and if she reproduces her Avondale form she is a decided possibility. Cynthia N. has already been placed over a similar distance. EXODUS ACROSS TASMAN. A. D. Webster has been in Wellington during the w r eek making arrangements for his return to Sydney next month. Webster will take another big team away, and in all probability he will have charge of Mr W. G. Stead’s rising three-year-old. Pillow Fight. Webster had Pillow Fight at Otaki when the Night Raid colt was rising two years. F. Iliggott is another trainer making arrangements to go to Sydney. H. Lorigan will leave with his own horses shortly, and will also probably have one or two others to add to his team. J. M’Laughlin is likely to return with Prince Pombal and his Australianbred youngster, and J. Fryer will take Peter Jackson and Gaine Carrington over in July, so there will be a real exodus to Australia again this year. * sfc- >i< * Cricket Bat has rejoined the team of H. and A. Cutts after a spell since Easter. ONE TO THE G P O. In the weighting-room at Newbury racecourse on April 8, there was a letter with the photograph of the New Zealander, Mr Boydie Davis, on the cover and the only address, “ Somewhere in Racing Land, England.” In pencil was scribbled: “Try Newbury.” Mr Davis duly got the letter. OTAUTAU RACES. Extra Meeting to be Held To-morrow. The Otautau Racing Club will hold an extra meeting to-morrow. The acceptances were satisfactory and the racing should be interesting. In the absence of The Smugler, King Balboa and Totolomai may prove hardest to defeat in the President’s Handicap. Nylotis should go well in the Birchwood Steeplechase. Inevitable and Totolomai are Macaulay Memorial candidates with good recent form. The programme is: —

ZOOM DESTROYED

The hunter Zoom, a four-year-old gelding by Warplane, broke a leg while working at Ellerslie on Tuesday, and had to be destroyed. Zoom had just passed the post after completing a six furlong gallop with a couple of companions, when a distinct crack could be heard, and he faltered and fell. Zoom was immediately destroyed when it was ascertained that he had broken a leg.
