HOSPITAL NURSES
Board Expected to Make Second Cut. Hospital boards throughout- the Dominion have been circularised by the Government to tTie effect that they are expected to impose a second “ cut ” similar to that passed by Parliament in respect to civil servants. So far the North Canterbury Hospital Board has taken no action in the direction of making a protest to the Government, as it is considered that the matter should be fully discussed by all the hospital boards in order to secure uniformity of action. It is probable that a conference will be held in Wellington next month, when the subject will be under general review. The attitude of the North Canterbury Hospital Board will be made public at its next meeting. Unless the Government insists on the cut as it did last year, the board is not likely to agree to the reduction. The chairman of the Hospital Boards’ Association, Mr W. Wallace, who is also chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board, has written a letter to all boards, suggesting that the “ cut ” should not apply to the staff allowance for board and lodging, as he is of the opinion that the lower-paid nurses should not be included in any salary reduction scheme.
